To get Metallica's tone one requirement is to either have good humbuckers, or active single coils. first off use the bridge pickup for the distorted stuff. Next dial in as much bass as you can on the amp. Then put your treble at 10, and for the old stuff you cut the mids completely. for some of the newer stuff, roll the mids up until it gets too cheesy. this is how they some of the crunch on "Sad But True" and "Devil's Dance". Then roll back the treble just until you get enough cut, to keep from getting a fizzled static sound. Plus don't automatically turn the gain to 10, you might find if you turn it down just a bit you get less noise and more attack. for clean sounds use either the middle or neck positions along with some effects. The only thing left is a lot of practice.
