Electro Harmonix / Big Muff

Ala' "Topographic Oceans"

Devices Used:
Big Muff, Gt-5, Akai E1 Headrush, MkII Marshall 50W Half (el-34s - 800 series), 70's Fender Twin, 70's Les Paul with a real 59' paf and jb, HM Strat, or a warm sounding guitar with a humbucker prone to good sustain. I've found Mahogany for set necks and basswood or ash for bolt ons work well for me.

Sound Description:
This pedal can reproduce the warm sustain solo Steve Howe used in Topograhic Oceans (a personal favorite) very closely as well as the haunting solo Robert Fripp did on a cut from Earthbound. Earthbound is a hard to find classic King Crimson release in the very early 70's recorded live in back of a VW micro bus in the rain on an Ampex 8 track. Peter Sinfield had just recently left the band and they did not have the rights to use lyrics so the recording was almost completely instrumental, spontaneous and very strange/dark. Wished I still had it so don't bother asking for a tape..;) Just a little history...

Settings:
Volume - your call, Distortion - 11 - 1 o'clock, Filter - 9 - 11 o'clock

Add some verb and light delay (Akai E1 Headrush)
Amp settings - use warm settings, roll off the highs a bit. My amp is set about flat while using the gt-5 parametric for eq.
